EMI stab Radiohead in the back catalogue

No Really. It’s Up To You

News No Comments

gee… were you surprised by this?

Radiohead fans pay £2.90 for digital album (Guardian)

A little more geeky point of view

As explained on In Rainbows, its up to you to pay what you want to pay for the 10 tracks.

Here’s the Press Release by ComScore

I think it’s quite early for you to drop your jaws or clap your hands (depending which end of the spectrum you’re supporting).

Bear in mind, the results seems to have purely mentioned results of those opting to download In Rainbows. So it is not known how many exactly has chosen to take up the second option of buying the Discbox version for 40 quid (freaking RM280!!).

On a personal level, it’s unfair to generalise music fans’ habit. We may trawl the internet bit-torrenting concert recordings, we may actively exchange our mp3s, but we are picky on the genres we listen to, and definitely on the quality of the art and sound. So don’t generalise the typical music fan as kiamsiap.

It has long been argued that the way music is being valued by the industry needs a makeover. Especially with the advent of technology making it a lot easier to bypass traditional marketing methods. Acknowledge that the music fan is a lot smarter to look past the fact that to sell good music, it does not need a fashion line, perfumes, a random charity cause, reality shows or swanky music videos. Give more credit to the intelligence of the artistes and their fans.

I am quite surprised by how some have chose to respond to Radiohead’s gimmick above as if they were the first band to release a full album potentially FOC to the rest of the world. Has anyone ever remembered Smashing Pumpkins’ releasing Machina as a free album on the internet or even closer to home, Afdlin Shauki offering a similar pay-what-you-like concept in a disgruntled response to his record label ?

BTW I confess.. I didn’t pay for In Rainbows :p
But yes, I am still on course to build up my Radiohead CD collection! (OK Computer will be next!)

ok, the angkasawan’s finally in space, the fasting month came and went, Radiohead sent their fans reeling In Rainbows, and even Gruvavenue held a successful sold out concert.

i don’t know how i’m going to keep up with the scene that i love best, but i’m gonna try my utmost best to give this site a tickle or two once in a while.

it’s less than 3 months to the new year, and yet there are still cool events going around town and the country.

This Thursday sees the launch of the 2007 Penang International Jazz Fest in KL where the real deal will be held from 29 Nov - 2 Dec on the island of Penang (well, of course! unlike the Fuji Rock Fest which isn’t actually held on Mount Fuji…)

And Nov 10 beckons a gigworthy event called Impulse featuring The Great Spy Experiment and Furniture. It’s on a Saturday night, so I guess you can’t give the “I-have-to-wake-up-early-for-work-the-next day” excuse to miss it.

ok, back to my Radiohead overload, I’ve got OKX and In Rainbows to listen to :)

seriously…

what’s the fuss behind the youtube national anthem fiasco ?

i think the dude is a good singer.

but i didn’t understand the point of the video.

i don’t understand mandarin so i couldn’t understand the rapping till i read the translation of the lyrics.

However the youtube video is a sad but true reflection of how many malaysians today have misunderstood assumptions of the other race. If the youtube video warrants an ISA arrest on Namewee,  the ISA should apply as well on many other malaysians should their kopitiam conversations be ever recorded and replayed.

If there is a reason to angered, it should be because of the fact that despite 50 years of achieving independence, despite the infamous May 13th incident reminded on and on again, most citizens of this nation today have yet to achieve a sense of integration racially nor have they understood the sensitivities of other religious beliefs.

The video is also a sad reflection of our typical ugly malaysian attitude. How many of us have just complained but yet not lift a finger to be proactive in the topics that we lament about ?  Do we realised that our complaints are sometimes based on hearsay?

I think that the worst thing you could do to an artiste is to ignore their work.

However, the meanest thing you could do to an artiste is to overreact and threaten them.
are we malaysians really down to the level of mean?

If you don’t like the video, just don’t play it for the umpteenth time and make your own blood boil… la.

Fopp flopped

News No Comments

Fopp has served as part of a good memory from my student days in UK where I could just run down from my room to the store in japanese slippers in the cold (ya ya it’s amazing i haven’t lost any toes yet) and check out any good CDs for £5 or so.

Their famous tagline was “suck it & see” where customers would be able to return purchases (although I do admit, not me but, i had friends abusing this policy before)

It’s pretty disheartening to read in the news lately announcing the closure of Fopp. [Guardian][BBC]
Wasn’t it some time ago that Tower Records had withdrawn from the UK and news reports have cited the evolution of how music is traded via over web & supermarkets being the downfall of the traditional record store.

Well as much as I await iTunes online music store being made available over in this part of the world, I can’t imagine a future where music fans having no avenues to walk in to a store and fawn over the latest music release or to searching for a gem cd they can’t wait to get their hands on.

Eee… imagine if we never had the concept of a record store, how would books and movies like High Fidelity , Empire Records be made ?
